OUR INITIATIVE

Mangrove Science and Carbon
Mangrove Nusantara advances mangrove conservation through research, monitoring, and science-based management. Our work includes mangrove habitat and structure studies, Mangrove Health Index assessments, rehabilitation monitoring, and blue carbon research to better understand ecosystem health, carbon potential, and climate resilience.

OUR INITIATIVE

Mangrove Rehabilitation
A 14-hectare restoration area, implemented in partnership with 4 community groups and private sector collaborators. The EMR methodology ensures ecological integrity while community groups lead long-term site monitoring.

Measuring the Impact of Plastic Removal on Mangroves
This project explores how plastic removal can improve mangrove health, biodiversity, and ecosystem recovery in Indonesia. It combines scientific research and community participation to monitor changes in mangrove ecosystems and generate evidence to support better conservation, waste management, and mangrove restoration.
OUR INITIATIVE

BETA: Belajar Bersama MATA (Learning with MATA)
BETA is an environmental education initiative that introduces children and communities to coastal ecosystems through interactive learning, games, and hands-on activities. The program builds awareness of mangrove ecology, ecosystem benefits, and coastal conservation while encouraging pride in and care for Bali’s coastal environment

Understanding Saltwater Crocodile Populations and Their Mangrove-Associated Habitats
This project studies saltwater crocodiles and their habitats in Sumba. It focuses on local knowledge and experiences, habitat protection, and safer coexistence between people and crocodiles. The project combines research and community participation to support long-term conservation.

Community-Based Mangrove Governance
Participatory research documenting local values, indigenous belief systems (including the Merapu tradition), and customary governance structures. Outputs strengthen village-level conservation policy and inclusive resource management.
Stories from the field, sharing our work, lessons, and the change we create together
For generations, people and crocodiles in Sumba have shared the same rivers, mangroves, and coastal spaces. Local knowledge, cultural beliefs, and customary practices play an important role in shaping this relationship, offering valuable insights for safer coexistence and community-based conservation.
Sustainable conservation depends on strong community involvement. By building local knowledge and skills in crocodile monitoring, communities in Sumba are becoming active partners in understanding and protecting crocodiles and their habitats.
Local knowledge and cultural values play an important role in mangrove conservation in Sumba. Communities’ understanding of mangroves, traditional practices, and Marapu values provide a foundation for protecting and sustainably using these ecosystems.
